Debarment Sought for Contractor

The Air Force Materiel Command has recommended that body-armor manufacturer Pinnacle Armor Inc. be debarred from federal contracting, Congress Daily reported.

The Air Force said Pinnacle falsely claimed that its Dragon Skin flexible armor had received a high-level certification from the National Institute of Justice.

A Pinnacle spokesman told Congress Daily the company had done nothing wrong.

Pinnacle has been involved in a long-running dispute with the military services over its product.

An Air Force official told the House Armed Services Committee June 6 that the service bought Dragon Skin armor that was “clearly and falsely marked” with a label saying it met Level III standards of protection certified by the National Institute of Justice.

Pinnacle CEO Murray Neal said the Institute had “verbally” authorized him to use the label.

The Air Force said Dragon Skin failed an independent test. Members of the Armed Services Committee have called for additional tests to determine whether Dragon Skin is superior to rigid body armor, as the company claims.
