  • Richard Spires resigns; Zients out

On leave since mid-March, Richard Spires has resigned from his post as chief information officer of the Homeland Security Department. He had been CIO since 2009 and recently vice chairman of the Federal CIO Council.

There have been rumors that Spires’ departure may be related to disagreements over CIO authority.

Also, Jeffrey Zients, deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget since 2009, has resigned. The move came shortly after Sylvia Mathews Burwell was confirmed as the new OMB director.
