Set-Aside Alert exclusive survey:Survey: Shutdown hurt small vendors’ trust in government35% “extremely worried” about another shutdownThe 35-day shutdown of most non-defense federal agencies in December and January has caused many small business federal contractors to lose some of their trust in the government as a reliable customer, according to Set-Aside Alert’s latest survey of 166 small vendors. In the survey, 42% of the respondents said that before the shutdown they felt “full trust” or very nearly full trust in the government as a reliable customer. Only 30% of the respondents said they felt full trust or very nearly full trust after the shutdown. The survey indicated that before the shutdown, the average level of distrust in the government as a customer was 3.7 on a scale of 1-10, with 10 representing complete lack of trust. After the shutdown, the average level of distrust was 5.2 on the scale. The survey also revealed that the small business federal contractors are very worried about the possibility of another shutdown in the near future. President Trump has threatened to shut down the same government agencies again if Congress does not provide $5.7 billion for wall construction at the southern border. On a scale of 1-10, with 1 being “not worried at all” and 10 being “extremely worried” about another shutdown, the average response was 6.7 on the scale. The survey of 170 respondents involved in federal contracting was conducted online from Feb. 1 to Feb. 9; 166 of those responding indicated they were small businesses. Of the small businesses, 45% said they had one or more contracts affected by the shutdown, and 36% anticipated losses of revenues. For 13% of the contractors, there were expected losses of 25% or more of revenues. Only 3% of the respondents expected to recoup their lost revenues fully.
