Report Card To Focus On Accessible Technology

GSA will begin grading agencies on their compliance with Section 508 accessibility standards, using the Bush administration’s favorite red-green scorecard.

Section 508 requires agencies to buy technology and electronics equipment that is accessible to people with disabilities. A GSA survey in November found that 80% of technology solicitations did not include the requirement, and only 7% were compliant, Federal Computer Week reported.

The newspaper said GSA plans to examine random samples of solicitations and issue grades to contracting officers and agencies’ Section 508 coordinators.

The Office of Management and Budget issued a memo in November reminding agencies of the requirement.

GSA maintains a Buy Accessible Wizard at www.buyaccessible.gov to help contracting officers comply and another website, www.Section508.gov, which explains the requirements.
