CR, debt vote or shutdown?
Debt ceiling needs vote
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Jan. 30 urged Congress to raise the U.S. debt ceiling “as soon as possible”--and definitely by mid- March--to avoid a catastrophic default on the U.S. debt. Republicans control both the House and Senate.
Congress already faces a Feb. 8 deadline to either pass a 2018 budget, approve another temporary funding measure or shut down the government again. There have been four Continuing Resolutions of temporary funding thus far in the current fiscal year, and a three-day shutdown last month.
A fifth CR that would last a month or longer into March is under discussion, but there also are controversial pending bills to lift budget caps set under a 2011 bipartisan deal, and on providing relief to the “Dreamers,” who are undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children.
